Setting Up The Feuds and Storylines Going Into WrestleMania

By Sukhdeep Singh

The WWE Elimination Chamber

The Elimination Chamber has always been a critical stop on the Road to WrestleMania. This premium live event has played a major role in setting up feuds and storylines heading into the grandest stage of them all. With the 2022 WWE Elimination Chamber coming up on this Saturday at noon eastern, I wanted to look back on some of the previous women’s matches. Let’s talk about the Top 5 women’s wrestling moments we got to witness at the WWE Elimination Chamber.

5: The Past vs The Present

Becky Lynch battles Mickie James in the Elimination Chamber 2017

2017 Elmination Chamber PPV: Becky Lynch vs Mickie James

Mickie James returned to WWE to successfully assist Alexa Bliss in her match against Becky Lynch on WWE Smackdown. This started her first feud with the Irish Lass Kicker. They fought for several weeks leading up to a one on one encounter between the two at Elimination Chamber. This was the first time when a past women’s WWE superstar wrestled a present women’s WWE superstar.

Not only two amazing and renowned superstars came face to face, the match was pretty decent as well. James and Lynch engaged in series of back and forth action and near falls before James attempting to go for her signature DDT only for Lynch to roll her up with schoolboy and steal the pin.

4: It’s Glow Time!

Naomi wins Smackdown Women’s Championship in Elimination Chamber 2017

Naomi Wins Smackdown Championship in 2017 Elimination Chamber

There is no denial that Naomi is loved by the fans. She keeps trending every week on Twitter. From 2013 to 2015, Naomi was actively feuding for WWE Divas Championship but came up short every time. Many fans wanted to see her as champion and their dream came true at the WWE Elimination Chamber 2017 event where she battled the reigning Smackdown Women’s Champion, Alexa Bliss.

While the match was pretty average, the outcome met with cheers from the crowd. As Alexa Bliss attempted for her finisher, Naomi raised her knees just in time to block and then proceeded to hit Bliss with her own finisher to pin. She became the third woman in history to win the Smackdown Women’s Championship. WWE Universe gave her a thunderous response and Naomi went on to celebrate with her newly won title.

3: First Ever Women’s Elimination Chamber Match

Alexa Bliss defends her Raw Women’s Championship inside the brutal structure in the 2018 Elimination Chamber

2018 First Ever Women’s Elimination Chamber

Elimination Chamber was always one of the high profile matches fans wanted for women and this dream came true in 2018. After a successful first ever women’s Royal Rumble Match, WWE announced first ever women’s Elimination Chamber match. It had Alexa Bliss defending her Raw Women’s Championship against Sasha Banks, Bayley, Mickie James, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville.

As it was the first time with elimination chamber, they played safe and didn’t have many innovative spots. Still all the ladies performed well. Sasha Banks and Bayley worked together to get Deville, Rose and James eliminated during the match. The second half of the match saw Bliss, Banks and Bayley battling until the end. Everything went well for Banks and Bayley teaming up until Banks betrayed Bayley and kick her off the pod. Banks and Bayley then engaged in their grudge battle against each other. This gave Bliss an opportunity to eliminate them both one by one and retain her title.

2: First Ever WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions

Sasha Banks and Bayley survive inside the cage to win the tag team titles in the 2019 Elimination Chamber

The First Ever Women’s Tag Team Champions: Sasha Banks and Bayley

This was the second women’s chamber match. This time, the winners would be awarded with brand new WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships. Three teams from Raw (Sasha Banks and Bayley, Nia Jax and Tamina, and Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan) and three teams from SmackDown (Billie Kay and Peyton Royce, Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville, and Naomi and Carmella) battle inside the structure.

The crowd was extremely into this match from the beginning. The match was amazing. It had so many innovative spots from all the challengers and gave all tag teams to showcase their abilities. Billie Kay and Peyton Royce perfectly depicted their opportunist characters while Nia Jax and Tamina were a pure mass of destruction. Sasha Banks and Bayley along with Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville were the final two tag teams. The story between Banks and Bayley was told so well during the match and it came full circle. Banks impressed everyone in the end when she made Deville tap out to one of the most innovative Bank Statement ever. This won the tag team titles for her and Bayley.

1: Queen of Spades Dominates

Shayna Baszler eliminates all her opponents in the 2020 Elimination Chamber match

Shayna Baszler Winning The 2020 Elimination Chamber

The WWE Elimination Chamber match of 2020 tops this list and let me tell you why. Shayna Baszler, Liv Morgan, Asuka, Natalya, Ruby Riott and Sarah Logan battled in this main event to secure a Raw Women’s Championship match against Becky Lynch at WrestleMania 36. Baszler entered the chamber at number four and started wreaking havoc immediately.

Shayna Baszler eliminated Sarah Logan, Ruby Riott, Natalya, and then Liv Morgan. She had to wait for the remaining opponent Asuka to make her entrance. As the time ran out releasing the last pod, WWE Universe cheered when Asuka entered the ring. Baszler and Asuka had a very brief back and forth before Baszler quickly locked her in Kirifuda Clutch. She defeated Asuka via submission.

Shayna Baszler had not only secured a Women’s Championship match at WrestleMania 36, but also set a unique record at the event. She became the first WWE superstar, regardless of gender, to eliminate all her chamber opponents single handedly. This was the first time in WWE history, they had booked a woman so strong, dominant and dangerous at a premium live event. Hence this historic moment became in my opinion, the best women’s wrestling moment ever in women’s Elimination Chamber event.

My Analysis

There are two major reasons for Shayna Baszler topping this list over the Golden Role Models winning the New Tag Team Championships or the First Ever Elimination Chamber match. First, this was the first time a women’s match main evented a PPV with none of the four horsewomen involved. Secondly, Baszler was so fresh at that time. It was really good to see WWE focusing on someone other than just those elite women.
