MLW Azteca Underground Is Coming

Thursday, January 6th Starts The Mini-Series 8:00pm EST on YouTube and FITE.tv

Court Bauer Is Taking Us to the Azteca Underground in January

Do you watch MLW? Yes, Major League Wrestling is an actual thing. You better jump on board. I’ve been watching it for a couple years now. Why? Well, I need to thank TJP. If you have listened to Pro Wrestling Overtime podcast especially in the earlier days then you know I love TJP, Josh Alexander and Alex Shelley. So while looking around one day for TJP matches I found MLW and Warrior Wrestling in the same day. I was hooked from then on. MLW has helped me discover MJF, Darby Allin, Brian Pillman Jr., Jacob Fatu, Jordan Oliver, Myron Reed, Calvin Tankman, The Von Erichs, “Filthy” Tom Lawlor and many others.

I can’t say enough good things about it. However, you need to note this…It’s on Thursdays now and it is still free. I tell my listeners on the podcast that you can’t find many very good wrestling shows for free on YouTube. If you have been watching MLW then you know in MLW Fusion the Azteca Underground has been mentioned and has been visited at least once during the Mil Muertes match. Rumors have been flying around since then of taking MLW further into the Azteca Underground.

MLW Fusion: Alpha

MLW Fusion: Alpha was the latest mini-series of the wrestling promotion. It ended on December 15th. During it, Alexander Hammerstone finally accomplished his goal of beating CONTRA’s Jacob Fatu and winning the MLW Heavyweight Championship. However, we also saw a split in CONTRA between Jacob Fatu and Mads Kruger. Plus Hammerstone decided to relinquish his National Openweight Championship that he held for two years, so that someone else could chase their dreams.

MLW: Azteca Underground

This is a standalone mini-series as MLW Head Court Bauer told Sports Illustrated that this series “is a precursor to an emerging world built around the Azteca Lucha brand.” The big question surrounding it is that could a regular series be coming if this catches on? It will debut on Thursday, January 6th at 8pm EST on YouTube and FITE.tv. Cesar Duran (the former Dario Cueto in Lucha Underground) will continue in his role in MLW: Azteca Underground after stirring things up and being surrounded in mystery on the MLW Fusion: Alpha. I can’t wait to see how he behaves in a different area where he is more familiar with the players.

Court Bauer has been intrigued with this idea for about two years now, but not me. Matches were taped in early December in Tijuana, Mexico with wrestlers from The Crash promotion who are fairly well known. Some of them were Psycho Clown, Pagano, the new AAA Mega Champion El Hijo de Vikingo who won at AAA TripleMania and the new up and coming star Aerostar. The MLW wrestlers that have been said to have been there are Richard Holliday and his Dynastic teammate, the MLW Champion Alexander Hammerstone, Davey Richards and the National Openweight Champion Alex Kane.

What Does That Mean?

I’m not sure about this mini-series. Honestly, I love the Dynasty, but they need a third member. Holliday really needs a big push. I could care less about Alex Kane and Davey Richards and as far as the Mexican wrestlers I really don’t care. On GCW, I watch Aramis, Gringo Loco, Ninja Mack, Arez and some of the others on GCW, but not into these wrestlers. I hope this is extremely short mini-series. The big rumor is that Konnan will also continue as an on-screen character while working with Court Bauer behind the scenes. I want to know if that means 5150 will be around with Konnan managing them. I would be interested in Danny Rivera and Slice Boogie making appearances.

What’s Next?

I hope I’m wrong, but I have a funny feeling that I’m going to suffer through MLW: Azteca Underground. I’m hearing that it is only about 4–5 episodes long. Since the last part of December I have been seeing commercials during MLW coming attractions that MLW will be taping on January 21st in Dallas, Texas. I can’t wait for this one because it looks like most of wrestlers I’m used to are finally making their way back like The Von Erichs. But I want to see some good storylines again. I guess we’ll have to wait and see how this goes.

PLUS: Just annouced MLW SuperFights coming to Charlotte, NC on February 26th.
